It was so fun! The school itself is beautiful. The building has a large table for everyone to stand at and the set up felt very professional. The food was all the basics (and a little more). I am a solo traveller, but easily fit in. We did the lesson for about 2 hours and then they cooked the pasta for us as we got to sit down and drink wine. Would definitely recommend!!!

This is the main attraction, a beautiful Gothic masterpiece. The black and white marble facade is iconic, and the interior boasts great sculptures, frescoes by Duccio, and stained glass windows. One of the major highlights is the mosaic floor, only revealed seasonally. Created by artists between the 14th and 16th centuries, its 56 panels portray biblical scenes, allegories, and history.

Baptistry of San Giovanni

Baptistry of San Giovanni

Access: Included with OPA SI Pass

This octagonal building is the baptismal font of Siena, located beneath the cathedral’s east end, and was built between the 1310s and the 1320s. Camaino di Crescentino oversaw most of the interior's construction, finishing around 1325. The star of the baptistry is the hexagonal font, a Renaissance masterpiece sculpted by Donatello, Ghiberti, and della Quercia. Its detailed bronze panels and statues are a must-see.

Museo dell'Opera

Museo dell'Opera

Access: Included with OPA SI Pass

Founded in 1869, housed in the north aisle of the 'New Cathedral', Museo dell'Opera is the oldest private museum of Italy. It is a journey through artistic and religious heritage of Siena.

Cathedral Crypt

The area beneath the Cathedral chancel, the Crypt of Siena Cathedral is an extraordinary find that had been hidden for centuries! Hidden for centuries and rediscovered in 1999, it boasts remarkably well-preserved frescoes from the late 13th century. These scenes depict stories from the Old and New Testaments, offering a rare glimpse into medieval artistic style and religious narratives.

Architecture

Siena Cathedral flaunts Italian Gothic architecture with Romanesque and Classical influence. The front façade has three portals, while the interior includes five naves and a dome. The cathedral also features ribbed vaults, while the inside walls are decorated with architectural details such as pilasters, rustications, and archivolts.

Facade

The incredible white, green, and red marble facade of Siena Cathedral was designed by Giovanni Pisano. Each of the cardinal points has its own distinctive work of art and architecture. Of the four facades, the west facade stands as a true example of Sienese workmanship, as it combines French Gothic elements with Tuscan Romanesque and Classical architecture.

The Pulpit

The hexagonal pulpit, crafted by Nicola Pisano in the 13th century, is a masterpiece of Gothic sculpture. It is supported by lions and depicts scenes from the life of Christ, a testament to Pisano’s special skill in creating dynamic and expressive figures.

The Dome

The cathedral's dome, with its striking black and white striped columns, adds to the overall grandeur of the interior. The dome is embellished with frescoes by Giorgio Vasari and Domenico Beccafumi, depicting the Assumption of the Virgin, which draws the eye upward and enhances the sense of space.

Floor

It is a highly decorated marble floor, unique of its kind in Italy with 56 panels of various sizes. Crafted from Carrara and Verona marble, the intricate mosaic inlay and graffito designs cover the entire floor. Created by about forty artists and craftsmen from the 14th to the 16th centuries, it stands as a masterpiece of Italian art.

The Choir and High Altar

The wooden choir stalls, intricately carved by Bartolomeo Neroni, and the high altar, with its exquisite marble work, are central features of the cathedral. The choir stalls are adorned with detailed scenes and figures, representing a high point in Renaissance woodcarving.

Stained glass windows

Siena Cathedral has 77 large stained glass windows created by many different artists, attracting tourists to see them up close.  One of the famous artworks at the Siena Cathedral is the rose window that Duccio di Buoninsegna designed.

Roof

The roof of Siena Cathedral is open to visitors, and is made up of different materials such as terracotta, lead, marble, and copper. Named at the "gate of heaven,” you get to walk above the nave to enjoy a view of the Cathedral and the outside from a unique vantage point.

Paintings

The paintings at Siena Cathedral showcase Sienese art and Italian culture from the 13th to 19th centuries. The most famous is the "Madonna del Voto" (Madonna of the Vow), a fresco cycle by Duccio di Buoninsegna, Simone Martini, and Ambrogio Lorenzetti, depicting the Virgin Mary vowing to protect Siena from future disasters.

Duomo Nuovo

The Duomo Nuovo was an ambitious expansion project initiated in 1339 to create one of the largest cathedrals in Europe. However, construction was halted due to the devastating plague of 1348, leaving only the unfinished façade visible today. This façade stands as a testament to Siena's architectural aspirations and serves as a popular viewpoint for visitors.

Facciatone

The Facciatone is the grand façade of the Duomo Nuovo. the new cathedral. It is notable for its polychrome marble decorations and is divided into two sections: the lower part, created by Giovanni Pisano, showcases a Gothic-Romanesque style, while the upper section exhibits late Gothic elements. It stands as a prominent feature on the eastern side of the existing cathedral.

Plan your Siena Cathedral visit
window
  • Visit early to not just beat the crowd, but appreciate the stained glass windows in their soft beauty of the warm light.
  • Explore strategically, start with the main cathedral interior. If you have the OPA SI Pass, tackle the Crypt and Baptistery next, as their queues are usually shorter. Save the Piccolomini Library for a quieter moment of reflection.
  • If you're up for a challenge and have the OPA SI Pass, consider the Panoramic Terrace for stunning city views. This vantage point offers a different perspective of the unfinished facade's grandeur. Just remember, it involves narrow stairs.
  • Pack some light snacks and water, especially if you plan to spend a longer time exploring. Food options near the cathedral can be pricey.
  • Look for the intriguing carved choir stalls within the main cathedral. Each stall features a unique depiction of a scene from the Bible.
  • Flash photography is not allowed inside the cathedral. Opt for natural light or low-light settings to capture the beauty of the artwork.
dress code

Since the Siena Cathedral is a place of religious interest, there is a strict dress code that applies to both men and women. Here are the key points to remember:

  • Shoulders must be covered for both men and women.
  • Shorts, skirts, and dresses should be at or below the knee. Shorts above the knee are not permitted.
  • Men should wear long trousers and a shirt with sleeves to the elbow.
  • Tank tops and bare shoulders are not allowed.

It's important to note that the Siena Cathedral is known for strictly enforcing these rules. If you arrive improperly dressed, you may be denied entry. To avoid any issues, it's best to dress modestly when planning to visit the cathedral. If you're visiting on a hot day, consider bringing a scarf or shawl to cover your shoulders or legs if needed.

Tips & guidelines

  • Avoid the main west façade staircase at 12 noon; heavy tour groups tend to cause long security waits.
  • Use the left-hand ramp instead of the main entrance; it generally has shorter queues for a quicker entry to the Piccolomini Library.
  • When leaving the Piccolomini Library, step near its arched window for unobstructed angles—ideal for capturing vivid fresco details.
  • If you experience vertigo, skip the narrow spiral stairs of Gate of Heaven; instead, enjoy panoramic views from the Facciatone terrace.
  • At the Baptistery entrance via Piazza San Giovanni, ensure shoulders and knees are covered; security enforces strict modest dress guidelines.
  • Access the Crypt through the dedicated museum entrance; this alternate route encounters fewer crowds and offers a peaceful view of 13th-century frescoes.
  • Opt for an early morning visit to the Piccolomini Library; softer light and fewer visitors make for a more relaxed experience.
  • During marble floor unveiling season, approach the mosaic area via the side aisle to avoid peak congestion and enjoy clearer views.

What is the OPA Si Pass and is it worth it?

The OPA Si Pass grants access to the full complex—including the Cathedral, Library, Crypt, Baptistery, Museo dell’Opera, and Facciatone terrace—and is valid for three consecutive days. It’s best for those planning a 2–3‑hour, in‑depth visit.

Does skip‑the‑line mean I never wait?

Not entirely. Skip‑the‑line tickets bypass the ticket office queue; however, everyone still undergoes security checks and sometimes faces lines at capacity‑controlled areas like the Facciatone or Gate of Heaven tours.

Is the Gate of Heaven tour included with my ticket?

No, the Gate of Heaven tour is a separate, premium upgrade that combines rooftop access with your OPA Si Pass. It offers a guided rooftop walk with limited capacity and is not part of the standard ticket.

What happens if I miss my timed entry slot?

Timed entry is enforced strictly. If you miss your slot—due to delays with transport or other reasons—you may need to rebook the ticket for another time, so it’s best to allow extra travel time.

Can I re‑enter the cathedral complex after I exit?

The OPA Si Pass is valid over three consecutive days; however, individual site re‑entry rules vary. Check the specific guidelines when planning your visit to avoid losing access once you exit.

What is the difference between a self‑guided ticket and a guided tour?

A self‑guided ticket, equipped with a digital audio guide, lets you explore at your own pace. A guided tour features a live guide who provides expert storytelling and a structured route through the complex.

Is Siena Cathedral accessible for wheelchairs?

The main cathedral is wheelchair‑accessible via a side ramp, but other areas—such as the Crypt, Baptistery, Facciatone terrace, and Gate of Heaven—require navigating stairs and narrow passages.

Are there discounts available for children or families?

Yes, children under 7 enter for free, and rates for those aged 7–11 are reduced. Family packages and combo tickets may also offer additional savings for group visits.

What is the best time to visit to avoid crowds?

Early weekday mornings around 10am typically have lighter crowds. Midday and popular floor‑unveiling periods attract more visitors, so booking an early or later slot can improve your overall experience.

What does a fast‑track or skip‑the‑line ticket include?

Fast‑track tickets give you digital confirmation to bypass the ticket office queue. However, you should still expect standard security checks before entering the cathedral complex.

Can I combine my Siena Cathedral ticket with other attractions?

Yes, combo tickets are offered that bundle the Siena Cathedral visit with nearby sites such as Santa Maria della Scala, streamlining your itinerary and often reducing overall wait times.

Is photography allowed inside the cathedral complex?

Non‑flash photography is generally permitted, though some areas—especially during Mass or in sensitive zones—may have restrictions. Follow posted guidelines and instructions from staff during your visit.

What should I know about the dress code at Siena Cathedral?

Visitors are expected to dress modestly; shoulders and knees should be covered to respect the active religious atmosphere. Bringing a light shawl or wearing long trousers helps ensure smooth entry.
